about

Inspired by the listening practices of composer Pauline Oliveros, the Audiobook Without Words is an album length work made from vocal “soundings.” All of the sonic material for this work was made from within the “deep listening” consciousness. The aesthetic goal was to reach towards the inner alien parts of the composer's being while observing the emptiness of existence.

In terms of timbre, extended vocal techniques are prominent throughout the album and the initial vocal material is improvisatory, a response in real-time to the surroundings and inner state of the composer. However, digital processing of the vocals with reversing, pitch and formant shifting, and contrapuntal alignment rely heavily on what might bring satisfaction to the listener's ear. Also present in the music is a world of musical theory in practice ranging from Nancarrow to Partch.
